Stereophonics, Hammersmith Apollo, October 2010

Die hard Stereophonics fans were treated to a celebration of the Word Gets Around album on Sunday 7th October at the Hammersmith Apollo in London. Luckily, I was one of them, taking in Phonics gig number 13.

The gig started with a montage of old clips set to "Live Wire" by AC/DC. And then In an emotional and party atmosphere, which Kelly dedicated to late ex-drummer Stuart Cable, the band reeled through the Word Gets Around album as well as playing a number of rarely heard live B-sides.

The connection between the band and the crowd was palpable, with Kelly pausing between songs to tell stories and generally jape around. It was a privilege to hear songs that the band had not played live for about ten years, and, in many cases are unlikely to ever play live again.

With Word Gets Around done, the lads then launched into a selection of their greatest hits from the next ten years, and, with two encores, the set ran well over two hours, at then end of which fans were still gagging for more.

Refreshingly Dakota did not close the show. It was second to last, with Kelly urging fans to "take the fucking roof off" when they brought this amazing show to an end with Bartender.

All in all, it was an amazing gig and one which will live long in the memory. Best Phonics gig ever?. Hmmmmmmmm, possibly actually!

WHW - Day 5 - Glasgow - Darlington & Summary!

Just to complete the journey and the blog, we headed up out of the hostel and headed to the train station where we went our separate ways. Me on a slow and dull train trip back south, and my brother for an equally slow, but slightly more interesting journey north.

And so, that was that. West Highland way done. It was tough. far tougher than I'd imagined. There were times when, I can't lie, it wasn't very enjoyable. However, for the sense of achievement, and the sense of triumph against adversity. And the challenge of seeing just what your body really is capable of when you push it, it really was great.

There's also the wonderful feeling you get when you chat to walkers, and they tell you you are crazy. Proving them wrong when they tell you "you won't get past this bit" is fun too.

There are also some magnificent views, and scenery. Even the sparse and remote, and barren sections are beautiful. Theres some fun, technical and challenging cycling to be found, and some brilliant downhill sections. I still wouldn't reccommend it though. If you're thinking of doing it, you must be mad. Luckily, we were, and we did :-)  

WHW - Day 4 - Rowardennan - Milngavie - Glasgow - Asda!

After being woken up by a bunch of oldies who decided it was fine to make loads of noise and have all the lights on while people were still in bed (got to love youth hostels), we got up to enjoy a nice cooked breakfast. I decided to get my own back for the early morning by trying to get the rest of the hostel out of bed by setting off the fire alarm by truly cremating my toast (nobody told me it wouldn't pop on it's own!!).

We were off by 9.30. The route continued along the side of the Loch, but was much tamer than the day before. There were still sections of pushing and climbing but also some nice fun and tricky downhill sections. Eventually we left the Lochside and found Balmaha. Here the route climbs up and then splits. There was a choice of another fecking big hill (Conic Hill) and a road route from Balmaha to Drymen. We actually intended on doing the hill (well we figured, we'd done it the hard way so far, why not continue!), however, at the point of the split, the only way markings were down, so we ended up missing the ascent and doing the road route.

From here back to Milngavie, the route was mostly flat and easy. Only the numerous gates were a pain! With Milngavie approaching, we upped the pace. we arrived at the official end point at about 4.30pm. Approximately 32 hours and 118 miles from when we started (including the Glencoe round trip). It was such a great feeling to reach the end. A real sense of achievement!

That wasn't quite the end though. After a victory pint in a nearby pub, we set off again! This time to Glasgow for our last overnight stop, via a Garage for a well needed jet-wash for the bikes!

Even when we got to Glasgow, we weren't done. Having arrived in Glasgow with nothing but the dirty bike clothes that had gotten us there, we needed to take a trip to buy some clothes from the "local" Asda. After taking charge of the map, I rapidly got us lost, but eventually we got there, purchased matching £15 outfits, and made our way back through the busy streets of Glasgow fighting the fading lights!

We had a few beers in the hostel and a curry and then went in search of some pubs which had been reccommended to us. Somehow though we failed to find them all (we'd managed to navigate the entire route south, and then couldn't even navigate to a pub in Glasgow centre! - I blame tiredness!). we did find a nice little pub though and after a couple of the barstaff had a blatant giggle at the matching outfits and celebratory beers (and even a whiskey) flowed. We left after last orders and snuck in to the hostel room so as not to wake up our chinese roomys.

How I wish we hadn't been so considerate after they started making a whole heap of noise at 5AM the next morning, and managed to continue making noise for a further THREE HOURS! Quite why it was necessary to hairdry a waterproof coat at 7.30am, when it was bright sunshine outside, is beyond me!!

 

WHW - Day 3 - Tyndrum - Rowardennan

Following the late night, we had a bit of a lie in, and didn't surface til 9am. With the rain pouring down outside, there was no real rush to go anywhere. We finally did head off at 10.30. A late start which later proved to be both the breaking and the making of the day. The day started simply enough along Glen Falloch between a number of mountain peaks on mostly easy terrain. The first section to Crianlarich was through Moorland and woodland with some climbing up the side of the valley. We found a number of stys along the way particularly awkward and annoying to get the bikes over, but that was nothing compared to what was to come!
We took a slight detour off trail to Crianlarich for a brief snack, to get some cash and what was a well needed and enjoyed cup of tea.

The trail from Crianlarich follows the river Falloch, road and railway. On one of the climbs, my bro did manage to topple the bike sideways into the shrubs, which levelled us at 1-1 in the fall count! As we approached the Loch there were some good fun Marshy moorlandy bits with wooden trails and steps to negotiate. we soon got some good views of the Loch which was to be our hell for the next 4 hours!

As we hit the start of the lochside section, it started to get difficult. The trail narrowed and got more uneven, and before long became unridable. When we reached the banks of the Loch, we had a choice: Soldier on through what we knew was unridable and difficult territory, or, cheat and take a ferry across the Loch so we could ride along the road on the other side, before taking another ferry back across further along - missing out the most of the bad section, but also meaning, technically, we wouldn't have completed the full route. We decided, for sensibility, safeness, and enjoyment reasons, that we would indeed take the cheating option and headed for the ferry. we took a lovely leisurely ferry trip across the Loch and bumped into some locals on the other side. Having enquired about ferries back across the Loch further down the way, we were told we needed to phone the hotel that ran the ferry trips. We were duly informed that the next and final ferry back across was in 15 minutes... and we'd never make it! So, after a long wait for the ferry driver to come back from running his errands (and by ferry, what I really mean is boat), we were travelling back across to begin what was without a doubt the toughest 3 hours of the trip.
It was about 4pm by the time we got back across the Loch, so time was against us now as well, as we still had quite a distance to travel before reaching our overnight stop in Rowardennan.

The next 2 and a half hours were hell! Lifting, pushing, carrying, scrambling, climbing, all with a bike in tow. Incredibly difficult. This included one section where we had to carry our bikes down about 20 near verticle wooden steps with just rocks and Loch below us. Did not like that. One slip, or loss of balance and there would have been much pain. Scary! (the pictures just don't do it justice). Following that, and more scrambling, I'm not sure there are words to describe the sinking feeling in my heart, when, after 2 hours of pure torture, we were faced with a 30ft climb up and round rocky steps barely wide enough to get one foot in at "Rob Roys" cave. At about 6.30pm, we made it tired, weary and broken (well, me at least!) to Inversnaid, the ferry point we would have arrived at had we had more luck earlier. We took the chance to fill up well empty water bottles here from the bar in the hotel (They must have loved me... but at least they took pity rather than throwing me out!!)
We then had to push on as we still had 11km to go before our overnight stop at Rowardennan. Luckily, this leg was much easier going. There were still some pretty tough and long hills to negotiate, but with the up came the down. We rolled in at 8.30 and there was a real feeling of elation (and relief!) to see the lights of the hostel. After a quick wash, it was off to the pub. Sadly we missed last food orders, so it was peanuts and 4 pints for tea in the one hour that we had!


 

WHW - Day 2 - Glencoe - Tyndrum

After a continental breakfast at the hostel, we set off at abour 9.30 on the next leg of the journey. My elbow was giving me some jip as it was making it very difficult/painful to bend my arm, but We had to traverse back along the pass of coe (A82 - a rather spectacular road...), to get back to the bottom of the Devils Staircase where we ended the day before, and back on to the trail. This in itself was about 6 miles uphill, but at least it was all on the road, which, whilst requiring a bit of "lorry dodging" was in the most part pretty easy going.

The trail then traversed around the foot of the mountains before a steady but long incline along by some hills opposite the Glencoe ski centre. We were then into Rannoch Moor territory, and this was easily the most barren and desolate part of the route, but it was at least relatively straight forward with a few occasional steep climbs. We then hit the cobbled Drove road which took us to Bridge of Orchy where we stopped to eat our hearty packed lunch from the hostel.

The remainder of the route from here to Tyndrum was straight forward enough, largely following the railway line along the valley. Unfortunately though, my suspension had decided to pack in, which meant that even the downhill sections from here on in were hard work as a had to cling to my bike with the bumps going right through my arms and rattling all my internal organs!

Arriving at Tyndrum at about 5.30, we took some time to clean up the bikes, and get our Wigwam (wooden tent) organised, before having a shower and then getting back on the bikes to head into Tyndrum and the Irish bar, Paddy's for 6 pints of Guinness and an amazing Venison and haggis burger.

I think it was here that we formulated the plan to get all the way to Glasgow as that would mean I could get the train south, and my bro the train back north to Fort William and his van. After such successes, we headed back along the road to the wigwams, with a head torch for a front light and me holding a flashing RAC torch at the rear. Possibly the most dangerous part of our whole trip - especially after all the Guinness!, but we arrived back safe and sound to join a curious lesbian pairing, and a fox, for a couple of beers and some friendly chit-chat.

 

WHW - Day 1 - Glen Nevis - Fort William - Glencoe

Set off from Glen Nevis at about 9am, to the start point at Fort William. Here we had the necessary start photos at what is technically the end of the "walk". We were tackling the route North to South as it is reccommended that ways for the nutters daft enough to do it on a bike. We set off on the trail out of Fort William by 10 am.

The start was steady climb out of fort william on wide mostly even tracks before some fun undulating sections in the Nevis Forests. It was here that I took a trip over my handlebars when I let my front wheel run off the trail and into a ditch running down the side. This was an early warning that I needed to treat this trail with a little more respect! Hilarity ensued.

I got up, brushed myself off, thanked my £2.99 shin guards that I had on my forearms for limiting the damage and got going again with only a badly bruised elbow to show for my escapade.

We then levelled off onto a long and arduous ride along the old military road. Large and loose rocks made it slow going across a U shaped valley on the mountainside. All around us loomed the impressive mountains of the scottish highlands in and around the nevis range.

We stopped half way along here for lunch at some old farm ruins. Some rather interesting but actually very tasty Egg, bacon and pate sandwhiches, concocted from the food we had left over from the stop-over.

At the end of this road was a short, steep, fun and technical descent into Kinlochleven where we paused for much needed liquid refreshment, chocolate and ice creams!
It was just as well we had taken on board some extra energy as the next 2 hours involved a brutal uphill - largely walking slog out of Kinlochleven, continuing to follow the old Military road up to the highest point of the way (548 metres), where we paused to take in the spectacular views of the peaks of Glencoe and Ben Nevis, and catch our breath before the steep descent down the "devils staircase" into the Pass of Coe.

From here we took a slight detour down into Glen Coe where we were staying for the evening. We met up with some guys doing Lands End To Jon-o-Groats in our hostel room. We felt rather humbled by this, but, did later in the trip decide that actually, road cycling was for pussies...

We showered and headed to the Claichaig Inn for a few pints and an amazingly nice Venison Casserole before stumbling back to the hostel for some "sleep".

 

WHW - Day 0 - Darlington - Fort William - Getting there, crashing cars!

The journey to the start point was all going so well. A perfect shopping trip in the morning to get all the bits I needed. A perfect drive north with very little traffic. A car that had been running terribly, now fixed, a perfectly timed stop for LPG. It was all going swimmingly. That is until a tree got in the way.

Coming round a corner, 1 mile from my destination and meeting up with my bro, I lost all grip, did some unplanned rally driving, and, ended up in a tree. Car trashed. Plans in tatters! Won't bore with the details of this, but after a couple of hours, the recovery vehicle had been to take my car away, and we were formulating new plans.

It was looking like we now wouldn't be able to do the full route (with no return vehicle), so, we figured we'd just see how far we could get before needing to turn back, or jump on a train. Taking my brothers can, we dropped off a supply of clean clothes at Glencoe and Tyndrum - two stops we knew we would make, and then carried on to the start point, and the hostel in Glen Nevis, near Fort William.

Finished the night drowning sorrows with beer and curry.

 

Redcar-Whitby and back! - and Pictures

Yesterday me and @AndyBell79 set off on an intrepid adventure to cycle from Redcar-Whitby and back.

Okay, so, it's not exactly Lands-End to John O'Groats, but it's certainly easiest the furthest I've attempted on a bike for some time.

Anyway, it was cool. Challenging with some steep and unforgiving hills, enjoyable with some nice cruises on the other sides of the hill, and a fun, if, unplanned excursion on to the Cleveland way!

I hadn't realised how many nice little places there are along the north-east coast :)

Latitude 2010 - Mini Reviews!

I just got back from a week in Suffolk, and a weekend at Latitude festival. All in all it was a pretty cool festo. It was much more chilled than any other music festo I've been too. More family orientated, with less mental drunk / drugged up people.

Organisation left a bit to be desired with half of the stewards not knowing what they were doing, but that did have it's benefits with us regularly slipping through the "Guest area" for a slightly more civilized beer, and a shorter walk in to the Arena!

Anyway, artists in order, with mini reviews!

Friday

Kassidy: Errr, poppy folk stuff. Not entirely sure, can't remember much about them, but they were OK. 2/5

Villagers : Indie guitar band. Again, nothing spectacular, but OK. 2/5

Laura Marling : Quaint, and chilled folk music. Perhaps the main stage was a little too much for her, but still good. 3/5

Empire Of The Sun: Upstaged themselves with the bizarre array of dancers and costumes which someone distracted from the music, but I enjoyed it! 3/5

Florence and the Machine : An hour of padding at the start. The last half hour was good. Perhaps not enough material to headline, just yet. 3/5

Saturday

Corinne Bailey Rae : Perfect start for a nice sunny afternoon. 3/5

Frank Turner : No idea who he was, but really got the crowd going, and some cool tunes. 4/5

James : a reliable performer. Played all the hits brilliantly. Crazy dancing. 4/5

Paul Heaton : Only caught about 10 minutes, but that 10 minuted was better than any of the many years of material from Beautiful South that I may have heard. 3/5

The Maccabees: First time I've seen them live. Very good. 4/5

Crystal Castles : Heard 30 seconds at the start of their set, and that 30 seconds too much. Apparently she started throwing up on, and attacking the crowd. Odd choice in the line up. 0/5

The Horrors: Horrible. 1 hour of noise. 1/5.

The XX: Brilliant. The chilled out and dark nature of their music suited the darkness of the Word Tent perfectly. It sounded epic. My band of the weekend. 5/5

Sunday

Tom Jones : Playing on the midday slot after thousands of fans were unable to see him open the festival on the tiny forest stage. Only played songs from the new Praise and Blame album despite the crowd's despairing plees for Sex Bomb. Still a great performance, and whilst the nature of the new album is a bit too gospel for my preference, the blues and rock-n-roll tunes behind them were great. And, after all, it was Tom Jones.

Mumford and Sons : Really enjoyable dance and sing-along stuff. 4/5

The Coral : Bit of a forgotten band, but a good performance. Some of the new stuff sounded good, and the couple of hits they had have aged well. 3/5

Vampire Weekend : Really surprised me. I wasn't much of a fan before seeing this performance. It's uncanny how many songs of theirs I recognised. Really good fun. 5/5

The highlights from elsewhere came mostly from the Poetry tent with Anna Freeman, Tim Turnbull, and some dude with a guitar who's name eludes me being particularly memorable.

An exciting team with everyone playing in position and with Lamps and Shrek on the bench- 2 game changing substitutes..... Now seriously, how hard was that?!

Stereophonics played a triumphant home coming gig and became the first act to headline the new Cardiff City Stadium last Saturday. A set list packed full of hits old and new entertained a raucous sell out Cardiff crowd of over 30,0000 (which of course included me!).

Kelly and co were clearly loving playing in front of such a large gathering of their home fans and were on fine form. It was a truly brilliant gig to have been at for number 12! :-)

So, went to see Ash at the O2 Academy in Newcastle last night. They were absolutely bloody brilliant! Totally rocked the place. Wheeler yielded his guitar with great expertise and the crowd went mental for old favourites like Kung Fu, Girl From Mars, Goldfinger and many more, as well as enjoying some of the excellent new material from the A-Z series.

An epic 1 hour 45 minute set. If you get a chance to catch them on tour, make sure you get yourselves there, they won't disappoint! :)

Manchester Weekend!

Just back from a weekend away in Manchester in celebration of Kris Burgess being old. It was the first time I've been and it will leave a lasting impression!

Maybe it's all the volcanic ash in the sky but it seems to be full of odd people! People who stand and shout random nonesense and perform crazy lightsabre routines in the middle of the street for your entertainment. "Yeah, you want to try living here" was the words of a passing greanpeace protester when I uttered the words "this place is just odd". It's also the first place I have been congratulated in the street for the brilliance of my t-shirt!

Had a great time though with Hard Rock Cafe cocktails, dogs, a fab indie night club (5th Avenue http://5thavenuemanchester.com/ ) and partying in the hotel room til 4am! Crazy fun times!

iPhone App Review: NDrive UK

I paid just £15 for this app, figuring at that price, it was worth a bit of a punt. I certainly don't regret it. It's an absolute bargain. It's not perfect. At times a bit basic and the UI can be a bit clunky, but for the price, you really can't complain.
I just got back from a road trip around the scottish highlands and it navigated me around flawlessly. Including diverting my route successfully when it first tried to take me down a snow-closed road. The instructions are clear and given in good time (repeated 3 times as you approach the direction, so no excuses for missing one!).
The map is clear enough and the time estimates it gives for your route are scarily accurate. I'm sure the TomTom and other expensive navigation apps do lot's of really clever stuff, but if you just want a nice simple app that will get you from A to B without any complication, then you really can't go wrong with this.

Weekend at the Cairngorms :)

I've just got back from a great easter weekend in the highlands and two brilliant days 'boarding at the Cairngorms ( http://cairngormmountain.co.uk/ ).
On Saturday, I took my niece snowboarding which was much fun. Visibility was a bit hit and miss, but snow conditions were excellent, and, it stayed fairly quiet which was handy as queues for the funicular and the easier T-bars remained pretty short.
We had a good fun day riding powder, jumping shrubbery, and we even venturing down the ciste gully!



Sunday was immense. Although it started cloudy, and a second 6am start took it's toll on my boarding in the morning, after refuelling and the sun coming out at lunch I had as good an afternoons boarding as I've had anywhere, ever. There was powder all over! I had an awesome top to bottom powder run. Truly incredible! I must have got about 20 runs in in the afternoon, flying between the button lifts.



It was good to catch up with Ally ( http://twitter.com/Allyaec ) and Dave ( http://twitter.com/storey247 ) too who where there for their first experience of real snow. I think it's safe to say they had a good time and will be back for more in the not too distant future :-)

Stereophonics: Keep Calm and Carry On - Metro Radio Arena, Newcastle

So, my 11th Stereophonics gig! Of course it was good, it's always good, however, in all honesty, a tad disappointing. The setlist seemed a bit odd at times. Although nothing wrong with the choice of songs particularly, it seemed a bit disjointed and random. The crowd were strangely flat as well, Kelly having to try and get them going on several occasions.

It was all just a little predictable, and lacked some of the verve of the Greatest Hits tour. No grand opening, no string accompanyment for the non-existent acoustic section of the set.

Still, this all sounds like doom and gloom. That's not really the case, it just wasn't the best of the 11 times I've seen them so far, that's all. Some of the new songs were good live - "Uppercut" was my highlight of the whole gig, and it was great to hear "Drowning" live for the first time. That's a very powerful song, and was great live. A full band version of "Maybe Tomorrow" was great too - I've only ever heard that done acoustically at live gigs.

There were som nice pyros too and, as always, Dakota was an epic ending. All in all a good night. Can't wait for Cardiff!!!

My 30th!

Okay, so it's a little way off just now, but, for your information, I have decided I am going heli-boarding for my 30th birthday!

Now, I appreciate that most of you will be unable or unwilling to join me in this, and that is just fine. I won't be expecting you too, nor will I expect you to organise me some surprise shindig. Although, if I was expecting it, then it wouldn't really be a surprise now would it :-P

For those who would like to join me, I guess you better get saving. But let me know. Because maybe we can split something.

However, were people to chip in and get me a track day for my present, then that would go down quite nicely! Haha. The cheek of it!

You see, I'm just trying to get my mid-life crisis out of the way early on, so I can get back to not growing up disgracefully as quickly as possible :-P

The Dark Side of Social Networking

As some of you may know, my relationship with the likes of Facebook and Twitter and the like has evolved and changed quite dramatically and suddenly recently. I thought I'd just spend a few minutes explaining this and the reasons behind that.

My use of Facebook has changed dramatically. I've gone from logging on constantly to just see what was going on, and just in case something had come my way that I hadn't been notified about already (terrible, I know), to now only logging on if I have a specific reason to. Now I must say, this isn't the first time I've been here, and, within a week or so, I'm back online and desperately trying to catch up. But not this time, this time it's different...

Why? Well, with Facebook I was getting more and more frustrated with the way I see it being used. More and more frequently, I see the following three "misuses" of the old 'book. I use that word lightly. I don't have a problem with those people using FB for these purposes, I'm sure they have very valid reasons for doing so, and good luck to them, but, well, it's not what I think these sites should be for.

1. People seeking social acception
These are the people that seek validation that the things they are doing are accepted by the people in their immediate (and not so immediate) social network. The people that get a kick out of people telling them they've done good. Facebook has probably at least tripled this form of "misuse" with the recent addition of the "like" feature.

2. People seeking therapy and life advice
These are the people that think they will find the answers to all life's problems by posting their woes into the book. Newsflash. You won't. What you will get is a bunch of confusing answers from people who don't really know you, looking to make themselves feel better. Or even worse, those with the "cheer up, it could be worse" style messages, who haven't actually even bothered to read what you wrote, they just saw the :( at the end of it.

3. Last but certainly not least: Speaking in the third person
Phil marsay is finding this one of the most annoying things in the history of the whole world, EVER. Oh my god, please, I mean really, there is no need. Facebook fix this PLEASE by taking the names off the start of the status posts. Put them on a separate line, please, please stop this abomination! If some one phoned you up and said
"hey Phil, what you up to?"
Once you got over the confusion of why they are calling you Phil. What would you say?
Would you say
"Phil is just out having a few drinks with his mates?"
No, of course you wouldn't. Now stop doing it in your status updates you bunch of humpty numptys!!

It sounds like I'm having a rant at Facebook and 99% of it's users. I'm not really, I'm just expressing my opinion. I can't help thinking too many people almost end up treating Facebook itself as a friend. Instead of talking to a good friend who cares, people broadcast to a website and wait for a response for someone who can only be bothered to keep in touch with them because there's this website where they can go and do it so easily, along with all of their other hundreds of friends that they keep their nosey beady eyes on.
Facebook is the bar that waters down your beer. Except it waters down your friendships instead. How sad is that?
Here's an idea when you need to talk to someone about something - pick up a phone and call them. Or text. Email. Even send them a message on, dare I say it Facebook, but do it one on one. It's so much more special.
And sure, use facebook to tell people what you are up to and keep in touch with your "friends". Genuinely, I'd like to know that you've lost 3lb on your new diet - well done you - or that you have just had a great day at the seaside - was it sunny?

But please, don't think that you will find your self esteem and social acceptance rocket because 5 people "like" your status, and when you're sat with a gun against your head, don't think Facebook will tell you not to pull that trigger, when you're lost and confused, don't expect it to show you the way.
Because, quite the contrary, it will probably make things worse. And no, I'm not just saying that. I've been there, seen it for myself. I also see it all the time all over the bloody site. A recent survey also said that people who spend a lot of time on the internet are more likely to be depressed than those that don't. I guess you could argue these people are depressed because they don't have the time/money/motivation to do anything other than sit in front of a computer screen, but, I wonder, just how much of their internet time is spent on social networking sites, trying to enhance their life experience through the online world?
And that, my friends, is why I'm out, and boy am I glad about it.

As for Twitter, well, that's much simpler and more innocent. I just found myself wasting my life away reading reams upon reams of pointless updates. And then making a bunch myself. It just introduced yet more chaos in my already relentless life. Constantly having all this informatino thrust at me all the time, all the days. So I've taken a step back from this, and now my twitter is intrinsicly linked with my blog. It's a way for me to tell you what I'm up to, and, occasionally, share some of my more random thoughts. It gives it a focus and a purpose.

So, if you're following my blog - firstly, I thank you, I'm very pleased that your interested. And secondly, please don't be offended or upset when I don't follow you back. It's not that I'm not interested in what you are doing, or, that I don't care. It's just that, actually, I do care, and believe me, I will take the time to come and find out what you are doing for myself when I can dedicate the time and energy that you deserve to our interaction. Because you are my friend, and that is so important to me.

My friends are the ones that keep me going, and they deserve better than someone who is only keeping up with what they are doing as some cursory, thoughtless and menial task. So, Phil is asking you to think about doing the same....

Glenshee, Scotland

A really excellent resort! This place just seems vast. Just when you think you've seen it all, you'll arrive at the bottom of yet another lift. They really do just bomburst off all over the mountain. On top of that you are free to explore what is, in terms of pure acreage, probably the biggest of the Scottish resorts.

Theres some steep stuff off the Cairnwell Chair, and beware of the Glas Maol Poma. It feeds an excellent and long run, but it will literally obliterate your private areas!!

The Nevis Range, Scotland

The Nevis range was an excellent and varied resort. The couple of chair lifts provide a welcome break from all the buttons and t-bars, although, as is the norm for Scottish resorts, you're going to have to ride a few tows to see the best bits of the mountain.

On a saturday with excellent conditions, it was surprisingly quiet.

The runs from the top of the "Goose" t-bar are reccommended for the more advanced rider.

Glencoe, Scotland

It's a little difficult for me to describe Glencoe, as when I went, I could see literally NONE of it! Visibility was dire.

It did seem like on a good day, there could have been a few runs that would have been good fun.

There looked like there might be some good runs from the top, but honestly, I really couldn't say!

It's a strange resort in that it's literally in the middle of nowhere, so on a good day, and in good conditions, chances are you'll get quite a quiet time in terms of crowds.

Scotlands "Original and most exciting" ski resort - I'm not sure about that. It looks like it's probably not changed since it opened!!

Basic, but worth a look on the right day.

Scottish Road/Boarding trip

Well, I sit here both tired, but very excited. After work tomorrow, I hit the road north in my new car, in search of some snowboarding fun in Scotland.

Never since I took up boarding have I known all the Scottish resorts to be open and covered in snow, so I'm taking advantage by taking a long weekend up there.

I'm heading up err tonight, staying over near the Glencoe resort (http://www.glencoemountain.co.uk/), going there to board on Friday, heading up towards the Nevis range (http://www.nevisrange.co.uk/) on Friday evening, and boarding there on Saturday. I'll then be heading up to my brothers, taking in either the Lecht (http://www.lecht.co.uk/) or Cairngorms (http://www.cairngormmountain.co.uk/) on Sunday, and then coming back on Monday..... via Glenshee (http://www.ski-glenshee.co.uk/)!!

It's going to be awesome.... so long as I don't get stuck in some snow-drift somewhere! I've bought a new shovel just in case!

Innsbruck!

I spent 8 days (plus some more) in Innsbruck over new year 09/10. All in all it was pretty good. The variety of ski resorts available is excellent with 9 to choose from. Whilst the local resorts (Nordkette and Patscherkofel) are really pretty small and probably only worth a visit if you want a real easy day, there are a number of other resorts easily accessable by bus.

Aximer Lizum and the Stubaier Glacier were the pick of the ones we visited. Aximer Lizum having smoe astonishing panoramic views and Subaier Glacier for it's sheer boardable size and powder. But Schlick 2000 gave us good fun for a day (and what a cool name!) and had a real nice party atmosphere early on on new years eve.
Kutai was good too, but a long long bus ride.

We stayed in the Innsbruck youth hostel, which was pretty much everything you'd expect from a youth hostel. It was clean and friendly, but, at times noisy and lacking the comforts of a hotel room and the privacy.

Away from the boarding, we found a brilliant bar called Theresienbräu which brewed it's own beer, and sold it on tap, in bottles, and even, in kegs (that you could order to your table!). Yes, we had a few beers in here! (http://www.brauwirtshaus.at/)

We also had a good few Guinness' in the irish bar, mostly drowning our sorrows at our travel delays, but also admiring the staff and the tunes.

New years eve we spent in the heart of Innsbruck being entertained by Chevy 57 ( http://www.chevy57.at/chevy57/ ) who played a whole load of classic rock 'n' roll tunes, and some Abba (queue crazy dancing man). It was a good, lively, and fun atmosphere. The surrounding streets were a bit crazy though with people just randomly setting fireworks off all over the place!

The journey home was a nightmare. Ironically having our flight cancelled twice because of snow in the UK, and then a major car window disaster when we finally got back on UK soil! Still, I'll look back at the holiday with fond memories, and, will look to go back to Innsbruck at some point soon. It was good. Rather like Chamonix, but with more choice, lower prices, and no french people :-P

SimplifyMedia.com - Play your iTunes from ANYWHERE!

I have just come across something, and its so blummin brilliant, I just have to share it.

Download the software to your primary iTunes PC and then you can stream your iTunes to any PC so long as your iTunes PC and the one you are sat at is online.

I tried it in the office to my home pc earlier today. Pretty impressive.

For iPhone users, there is even an app which allows you to do the same. You can even stream fairly successfully over a 3G connection! So technically, you can carry your entire itunes library around with you! Serously cool. Who needs a 120gb iPod??!

The only drawback I've found so far is that although it does claim to support Winamp and Media Player too, I was unable to get it to work in WinAmp. Works a dream in iTunes though. I haven't tried Media Player...

Rosa Ward: A tribute

A tribute to my wonderful Nana who sadly passed away a couple of weeks ago...

Rosa was born 87 years ago on a farm in Easby, near Great Ayton. She was the eldest of four. From the earliest of years the children had to do their share of the work on the farm. Rosa would be up at 5 am to milk the cows, then there would be the three mile walk to school at Inglby. They worked from morning to night. Farm work didn’t stop for weekends and on Sundays there would be trips to Sunday school and chapel.
However it was a life that Rosa accepted and enjoyed. She loved animals and being in the countryside.
Rosa married and her two daughters were also born on the farm. Julie was driving a tractor at five years old. The marriage did not work out and Rosa and her girls moved to Great Ayton.
Rosa loved to go dancing and it was at one of the Hutton Rudby dances that she was to meet Harry who ran a pub in the village. Harry was the love of her life. He became a dad to Julie and Audrey and Rosa step mother to Harry’s son Tony. They also were to have their own much loved son Jim.
It was a very sad time for her when Harry died some seventeen years ago.
Rosa was always a hard worker. She had a variety of catering and domestic posts. Over the years she’d worked in the kitchens at the Friends School. She’d been top chef at the Royal Oak. She’d had jobs at three different private houses. For a time she was at Petch’s pies and then making bread at Hills Bakery. She’d also worked as a bus conductress. A great worker and on top of these jobs she would get on her bike and peddle up to the farm to help with the harvest.
Her daughters say she was a great mother. They knew she was always there for them ready to listen, to help and support them. She had time for them, was always full of love for them. She was proud of them but they’d hear this through other people.
Her family was to grow to include her son-in-law Maurice and Richard and then she became a proud and loving Nana to grandchildren Neil, Adrian, Philip, Paul, Andrew, Danielle and Harry.
Paul and Andrew lived close by and when young would stay with Rosa for months at a time. I’m sure you all have your own special memories of her.
In time her family increased to include their families. She became a great grandmother and a great, great grandmother.

Rosa had had her hobbies. In earlier days she’d been a great knitter and even in her later days she’d been knitting cotton dish cloths.
She loved animals, most especially her dogs. They always had priority in her household. If a dog was on the sofa you were not.
She liked anything to do with nature and really enjoyed those sort of programmes on TV.
One of her great loves was Whitby. On trips there they had to arrive early enough to make sure they could enjoy fish and chips for lunch and tea.
She was a quiet home loving lady but her door was always open to friends and neighbours. She had a good sense of humour and people liked Rosa. She was a very kind and generous lady, ready to give you her last penny. Julie and Audrey have had cards of sympathy from people who have known Rosa over the years, card’s that speak of her as a lovely, gentle lady.
She was at her happiest in the kitchen making food for others. She just loved to feed people. She was famous for her ginger biscuits.
She did enjoy her sherry and her cigarettes. She’d started smoking at 12 years old and then on her 80th Birthday she just stopped.
It was in her latter years that she found she had a talent for writing verse. She had won five awards for her various verses. I now read one of these winners that she wrote in 2004.

Rosa has had dark times in her life the loss of Harry and Jim. She got through these hard times with her simple philosophy of taking one day at a time and she encouraged her family to do the same. She was never one to moan or tell you if she was unwell.
When she became older she went to live in sheltered accommodation in Town Close in Stokesly and then when she needed more care she came to the Lawns Care Home. She was very happy and well cared for here. It was a real home to her and she was loved by those who cared for her.
It was here that Rosa died very peacefully. Julie was there. The end of a long and full life of a lady who was so well loved.

I read a poem by David Harkin as I think Rosa would have approved of its message to you.

You can shed tears that she is gone
or you can smile because she has lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that she’ll come back
or you can open your eyes and see all she’s left.
Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her
or you can be full of the love you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember her and only that she’s gone
Or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
or you can do what she’d want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

We will now sit and listen to some music. It is the hymn that expresses Rosa’s own philosophy of life of taking one day at a time. As you listen you can each remember her and what he meant to you, the part he has played in your life. If you have a religious faith you may like to use this time for your own private and personal prayers.

The separateness, the uniqueness of each human life is the basis of our grief in bereavement. Look through the whole world and there is no-one like the one you have lost. No-one just like Rosa. But she still lives on in your memories and, though no longer a visible part of your lives, she will always remain a member of your family or your circle, through the influence she has had on you, and the special part she has played in your lives.
Julie and Audrey would like me to thank you, on their behalf, for being here today, and they would like you to know that any donations made in Rosa’s memory will go to the Air Ambulance Service. And they invite you to join them for refreshments, after the ceremony at Julie’s home 43 Edgecombe Drive.

I close with a native Indian poem that seems right for Rosa thinking of her love of all the things of nature.

And so in love remember Rosa’s life, the qualities you loved and admired, your memories of her. They are a reality that can never die.

I've got the answer to the countries booze problems!

So I saw on the news this week the governments latest attempt at covering up what is just simply another way of taxing us, with some ridiculous idea that it is going to stop the nations - and in particular the nations kids - binge drinking.

The idea is that by setting a minimum price on booze, it will put people off buying it. No. It won't. All it will do is punish the less well off who enjoy a drink - as is their right. As I say, all this is is another tax.

The answer is really really simple, and we should look to what many areas of the USA and Canada are already doing. The problem is availability, not price. In this country, you can walk into just about any grocery store, supermarket and corner shop and buy alcohol. It's too easy. In the parts of USA and Canada that I've visited, this just isn't possible. The only place you can buy alcohol is at a licqour store. It means you have to go to a special effort. It also means it can be more easily controlled - far easier to ensure it can't be bought by those under age.

I also think we should raise the age that you can buy alcohol to 21. I think that would put more youngsters off, or at least limit those that slip through the net. Maybe. Maybe even some clever idea of not allowing them to buy alcohol from stores, but still allowing them to be served in pubs at 18.

Of course, neither of these would be popular decisions, should the government be reading this and decide to take my advice. Sometimes, though, it's about having the balls to make an unpopular decision. Isn't that what the government is for? To look after and "govern" us?

I dunno, I don't really do politics, but these are just my thoughts on this matter. We are becoming a nation renouned for it's booze culture, which is a bit embarassing really. Not that there's anything wrong with a few drinks here and there - I've been known to enjoy a few myself from time to time ;-)

Corderouy Pistes!

A small but friendly resort. A big change to it's big brother - Jackson Hole - down the road. It is small, but incredibly good value. $40 will get you a day pass that runs from 10am to 8pm (so includes night skiing).

The runs are limited, but incredibly well groomed allow you to race down at some speed. There are a couple of challenging double-black runs, but I can't comment on them as I never got to them.

There's also tubing, ice skating, and the plush Snow King Hotel on site.

Not bad for a "day off"!

Jackson Hole (Wyoming, USA)

Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is brutal and unforgiving...and I loved it! It is challenging, steep, and quite frequently deep with powder.

It's not for the faint hearted. Even the pistes tend to get choppy due to the levels of snow. This is no place to go cruising round the blues. For off-pisters, and people who like a challenge, it's perfect. The whole mountain is pretty much your playground. The pistes are mainly a guideline. There is so much off-piste to explore, from the steep chutes, the deep powder from the treks from the Gondola (it's like going back country), to the numerous routes to pick through the trees. It's a dream.

The impressive sky tram provides easy access to snow up top when things are getting ropey down below, but again, it's not for the weak. The sign hung in large red letters - "You will die if you go the wrong way" (or words to that effect) - are a pointer to the fact that their are no easy runs from up top (although it's not as frightening as they make out. Any black/red runner will negotiate it fine.

When the snow comes, this resort really comes into it's own. Powderific. Also, although we managed to hit all the lifts by lunchtime one day, theres still plenty to explore. It took two weeks for us to cover most of the mountain, but even then, there was some bits we never got to - including many of the hikes to the other "Back country" stuff.

Normally in these little sections, I'll give some sort of guide on some runs to check out, but to be quite honest, just check the whole mountain out! I guess, if there's been snow then Laramie bowl is pretty awesome, and the blue run "Amphitheatre" tends to accumulate lots of snow.

Bizarrley, the mountains biggest plus, is it's biggest downfall. As I say, it really is quite brutal and unforgiving, so, if you are having a bad day, you'll really have a bad day. Theres not much around for you to cruise around and build some confidence up... Or maybe there is, but there will be too much to distract you away from that!

Jackson Hole Days 13,14: Return to Form, Hiking, Drop-Offs and the Lift Challenge!

The last two days at Jackson Hole resort were just outstanding.

On day 13 we had yet another morning of constant snowfall, and hence amazing conditions on most of the mountain. This is honestly - on the whole - the best conditions I have ever had for a boarding holiday.

In the afternoon, the skies even cleared. We took our second hike up "Headwall". Bloody hard work all this hiking! But you know, this back country-lark takes some dedication ;-)

We also got a nice clear run from the summit of the tram (although, we picked the wrong route at the bottom and ended up in a nasty narrow gully (Cheyenne Gully) which was still quite cack and icy and involved a walk out as the two routes out veered up hill and no more than a person wide.
We also had a look at the famed Corbets Couloir on the way down. This is an extreme run that the resort is famous for. It's basically a 10ft drop off a chute in a cliff face (and that's no exaggeration). Just looking at it nearly made me poo my pants. Incredibly scary for even the most expert of skier, and I honestly think, that an attempt at it on a snowboard would have only one result (death!).

In the evening we went for a nice meal in one of the hotels in town, and then a couple of drinks in their bar (The Silver Dollar Bar).

Day 14 was the last day on the slopes :-(. But we really made the most of it. Conditions were again amazing, with yet more snow falling. We had a plan to hit all the lifts (10 in total) - and to attempt to complete this by lunchtime. We could have done it. There was only the tram left by 12pm, but we decided to stop to miss the lunchtime rush in the restaurants.

This was actually a pretty cool way to get a lot of time on the hill on the last days and fully explore the mountain.

Following this we went to a little drop off/jump that we had found and did a bit of thrill seeking and videography! It's quite a rush dropping off the end of something and not being able to see where you are going to land! You get some serious speed up too! Hopefully, some good pictures will come out of it that I can really show off :-)

After this we did our final couple of runs and wound up the holiday. Did a final bit of shopping including the purchase of the ultimate bargain a $9 blow-up tram - $70 for a replica tram set seemed a bit much (though it was cool!).

Had a mini party in the room on the evening to finish off the rum, Jim, and beer, before a certain bathroom disaster. Haha Andy!

So that pretty much is it. All that was left was the monster journey back, which actually, wasn't really all that bad thanks to an iPhone full of entertainment. I will post a bit of a round up tomorrow evening!

Jackson Blog Days 11,12 : Back in White!

After a few days of no snow, lots of sun, slush, and ice, the snow has returned in full force. From Wednesday evening all through Thursday and into Friday morning, the snow was none-stop leading to a return to the powdery conditions of last week. Top banana. Even though I don't like bananas.

Highlight of the last couple of days still might be my brothers gondola faux-pas... It cetainly ain't my boarding as it's been poop!

Everything is hurting right now, but there's still two great days to be had before I head back on the monster journey back to the UK, so I will just have to keep pumping the painkillers until then!

Went to the ice hockey again last night to see the Moose play a NHL all stars alumni team. Hadn't heard of any of the players, buy it was a great game. Moose narrowly losing out 6 to 5.

Jackson Blog days 8,9,10 : changing conditions!

Can't really be bothered to write much! Very tired!

Conditions this week have changed somewhat. It's really warmed up this week which has led to slushy and icy conditions. In fact today really has not been pleasant.

It was snowing as we left the resort and it is colder this evening, so hopefully we will get some better conditions before the end of the hols. 4 days left on the slopes.

In other news, we've had an amazing Mexican meal, complete with tequila I had an amazing steak and tonight we had a true American diner style burger.

Oh, and we've also discovered the "Mangy moose". Après ski with quite spectacular scenery... ;-)

Jackson Blog Day 7 : Various Brokenness

OK, so I guess, this is halfway through the holiday. The legs should be good now, confidence high, and we should be flying.... Hmmm!

Today has been tough. Continued the switch practice this morning and when on collision course with my niece, crashed out to avoid wiping her out. Fell flat on my chest and had walkie talkies, mobile phones and various other implements jammed onto my ribs! Ouch! Took a bit of a winding, and a big confidence killer. My boarding for the rest of the day was pretty cack, and bending over to do bindings was quite uncomfortable!

We did do a good run down from the sky-tram though... Well, me and my brother did. Andy decided he would rather do half the run, then walk back up the mountain! hehe! In fairness, it did look quite hairy at one point! We definitely broke Andy though... "I don't feel like eating" he said at lunch... words, you'd never thought A Bell would utter :-)

We also took Megan down quite a nasty run late in the day! Hehe. Crazy Marsay's. We are encouragable!! She did really well though to get down though. She'll be showing us all up before long!

And now, here I am, back at the hotel. Drinking beer until it stops hurting, and until I forget how rubbish I was today. I quite fancy some Jack (when in Rome..), so a trip to the licquor store might be in order. Tomorrow is another day. Stan (sister in laws brother), arrives tomorrow, so we need to be in top form so we can lead him astray down all kinds of crazy runs :-D.

I'm sure tomorrow I will be better.. and if I'm not, I'm sure it will be more painful! lol!

It's all good, you have to remember, this isn't a holiday, it's a torture camp :-D

Jackson Blog Day 6 : Clocking 80km/h!

OK, as I sat on my bed in my pants drinking beer, let's try and get caught up...

So, yesterday me, Andy and Megan went to the Snow King resort for our "day off" while Yvonne cruised the shops. Snow King is a much smaller resort in the town of Jackson itself. It had corderouy, hard packed pistes which were VERY fast! Downloaded an app to my iPhone the night before which could track your run, an tell you your max speed etc, and had a play with this. Pointed the board downhill and hit 80km/h on one run! Pretty breathtaking, but muchos fun! Reckon I could go faster though :-D

Took a break in the afternoon to do some tubing which was good japes, and then snowboarded to sunset, taking advantage of the night-skiing which was part of the day-pass. Practiced some switch riding, which went mostly well, but did result in a few butt-bruising falls!

Dominos and a film in the evening. Happy Gilmore. Pretty beat again though - hard work these snowboarding holidays!!

Jackson Blog Day 5 : Powder day!

Wow, what a day yesterday was! Oodles of fresh snow everywhere and with the sun having his hat on conditions were perfect. Queues for the tram were huge so we avoided that, but there was so much powder everywhere that really, there was no need to be venturing up there, where visibility wasn't looking so good anyway.

My new boots took a but of getting used to at first as they do require a slightly different riding technique. As I'm getting more response on the board from the boots, there's less need to try and overwork the movements to get things going. This is a good thing though as it means that aswell as having comfortable feet, it's also not so hard work on the legs.

Highlight of the days boarding was definitely the hike up to untracked deep deep powder just beyond the gondola. Although many tumbles were taken by all, including me ending up upside down, buried in snow, with my board wedged in a tree(!!), it was just amazing fun. Truly what snowboarding is all about, and we will definitely be giving that another go before the end of the hols.

Spent most of the rest of the day exploring the bowls, the trees, and just generally staying off the pistes as much as humanly possible! This mountain is just brilliant!

On the evening we went to see the local ice hockey team - the jackson hole moose - take a 6-2 pasting from the mccall mountaineers. Although it wasnt in the same league as a flames game (literally!), it was still good fun and Megan enjoyed it. There's an all-star NHL alumni team playing next Friday so that could be worth checking out.

Just to give mention to a somewhat random dream I had last night, can I just take a moment to thank cheryl cole for the advice :-S!!

We are off to the smaller Snow King resort today. We have a spare day that our JH lift pass doesn't cover, and, guessing that JH will be heaving with locals today, we are going to give it a go. Nigh be doing some tubing, maybe some ice skating too, so should be a bit of a change of pace. It's all good!

Jackson Blog Day 4 : Snow, snow, snow, and new boots!

I'm gonna keep this fairly brief today. Time a not on my side and there's not a deal to say about yesterday.

We were all struggling a bit yesterday with sore legs and tiredness. The third day on the slopes is often a hard one and we hadn't exactly been taking it easy in the first two days. After a gentle warm up run, we headed straight up the sky tram to hit the fresh snow from the day before. Pretty awesome again, but again next to no visibility so we did feel our way down quite gingerly!
After this we did a couple of runs off the gondola by which point the snow was teaming down!

We stopped for lunch and some beers and that's where it all went a bit wrong. With my feet suffering the usual pains all morning, my brother suggested I try his...and the difference was so vast that after an afternoon in the shops, several boot fittings and some cunning bartering, I was the owner of a new pair of Vans boots! Spent more than I had wanted to, but they are good stiff boots, and have the boa dial adjustment dial, which will be so much easier than arsing on re-doing laces after every run! Felt like a bit of a wasted afternoon but with the snow blizzard like outside, visibility would not have been great, and with everyone feeling it a bit, the break wasn't too unwelcome. If itmeans I am relatively pain free for the rest of the hold then it will have been worth it, but we shall see!

Anyway, there we are. Gonna go get ready now. With all the snow that's dumped, it should be awesome today. Just hope skies are a bit clearer so we can take full advantage!

On the evening we headed to the supermarket for essential supplies (twinkies!) and then (eventually) got pizza delivered.

Jackson Blog Day 3 - Steep n deep!

Ok, so just to finish off where I left you. Following my last blog we went into town for tea. We landed in a nice little family steakhouse diner. So, naturally, I had fish! Rainbow trout in fact. Yummers! The others did have steak though and it looked mighty fine.

Following that, a quick excursion to the snowboard shop as my bro was after price checking a new board and I needed goggles, but alas it was shut. Made our way home via the supermarket where the legendary twinkies were found and purchased, and then via the licqour store where a large stash of pbs beer was purchased. Americas finest in 1893, apparently!

There's little else to report from the evening. We were all so tired when we got back, that simply staying awake was quite a challenge (at about 9pm!). Just about held out til 10pm before just giving up!

So, onto day 3. Up, breakfast and on the bus by 8- it has to be said the whole bus thing is much more civilized here than in banff. In fact, all in all it's more laid back here, I'd say. Apparently it is quite quiet due to "bad snow". Blimey... If this is bad snow, I can't begin to imagine what it's like when it's good!

My brother had borrowed a demo board at the end of yesterday- determined to get a new one. It was a k2 gyrator- one of these new breed of "rocker" boards that curve the opposite way. One test run later and a new board was purchased! Not the gyrator, but it's sister board... I forget it's name, but it's very similar.

Megan went into snowboard school today and yvonne was on skis so we all did some runs together. Legs holding up surprisingly well after getting over the early morning stiffness. Stopped for some lunch with a blizzard raging outside (shame...lol), after which me, andy and my bro decided it was time to take the sky tram right to the very top despite utter cack visibility! Can't deny feeling a little nervous at the signs saying we would die, and that this was expert terrain only (and we are doing this in a white-out?!?!), but infact, although it was a bit tricky to see, so long as you stuck to marked routes, it was perfectly fine.

It was amazing infact, true steep n deep! Reminded me of the lower section of delirium dive. It's gonna be amazing there today if the snow has continued, so we will be heading up there first thing!

It was a long run down though and the legs were feeling it at the bottom, so we stopped for a beer before heading out for one last run. I'm totally loving it, feel so great and confident on my new board. I'm whizzing through moguls, carving, jumping, riding fakie, buttering... And yes, I am a show off :-P. My bro is loving his new board too, so it's all good!

Had a fairly quiet evening in with a Chinese take-away, beer, hannah Montana and some cack Disney film. Managed to eek the evening out to 11pm before hitting the zs so, slowly coming to terms with the jetlag!

And so that brings us to now, laid in my super comfy bed, but now I need to get up and get ready for another gnarly day! Woop! Until next time folks... X

Jackson Blog Day 2 - Ow, my toes! :-)

Just a quick one as I'm laid wide awake at 5am. Damn jetlag has me up at this insane time... We are 8 hours behind over here so the body clock is going to take some adjusting. Or is it simply the excitement of acres of allegedly unpisted and untamed mountain that lies in wait today?!

...

And now I rejoin you after the first full day on the piste. So far. Bloody brilliant. The mountain is just one huge great adventure waiting to be explored! We've already done some pretty gnarly stuff. Some deliberate. Some by accident! Snow today was pretty awesome to start with. Started to slush and ice over a bit at the end of the day, but in fairness, we haven't made it up to the top yet where - apparently - the best conditions are to be had.

We are all loving it :-D. My niece, Megan has got on real well today, up until the last run where tiredness got the better of her. Sis in law Yvonne is back on board and doing well, and Andys boarding has come on leaps and bounds - he's leaving me behind and leading me down Mogul fields! lol.

Got about 5 runs done today before the pain in the burning thighs and the crushed toes, and the jetlag started to kick in. But, for first day on the slopes, to be on the first lift for 9.30, and to still be going until the last lift (albeit a bit stop-start at times), I'd say that's a pretty good effort.

Anyway, having sat here chilling for a bit. Chill time is almost over. Off into town for some grub, and to buy a much needed new pair of goggles having struggled through with sunnies today.

The Jackson Blog - Day 1

So here we are, and here I am in the trappers inn hotel in Jackson, Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

We've just got back from a brief wander into town and a few quiet holiday starting beers in the cowboy bar! First impressions of Jackson are good. Certainly is very western, and there doesn't seem to be too many of us non-Americans about which just makes the place feel more authentic. Definitely has a different vibe to it than any other snow resort I've visited before.

The holiday has been mostly travelling so far. Flight from Newcastle to Heathrow was cool. Free beer! And sure beat driving. Hotel at Heathrow was very nice, and some more beers were had in a pub over the road and then later, on bro and co's arrival, in the hotel bar.

Flight to Jackson via Dallas was all in all pretty pleasant. Long, but plenty to keep us entertained. Notable mentions also to the hoardes of Swedish cheerleaders on the Dallas flight and my brothers exceptional face-plant in the Jackson airport!

Anyway, bedtime. Up early to hit the slopes tomorrow...

With Scotland done, it's now only a matter of days until we fly out to the states for 2 weeks in Jackson hole!

So this week I will be frantically trying to get ready. Packing, waxing my board, organising all those important bits of paper, getting sorted at work and, of course, regular checks on the snow report.

And speaking of which, oh looky, it's going to snow today.... Oh... And tomorrow... :-D hee hee!!

Awesome cairngorms sesh!

As I sit, in a queue of cars waiting to get up to the cairngorms base station, here's a little blog about yesterdays gnarly session!

Never have I seen so much snow at the 'gorms. With all lifts and all runs open, it was about as good as you are gonna get in Scotland. Conditions were good too with well groomed pistes and some softer stuff to be found to the sides of the pistes- pretty good stuff to play ok with a snowboard!

Practiced a fair bit of fakie which was going well until I caught a massive back edge on something quite steep and when the light wasn't at it's best! Ouch! Bit of a sore arm today!!

All good though, got a full days action in. It was better than France!!

Anyway, we are on the move again now, so I'll leave it at that for now. Philly- mobile blogger, over and out!! x

The Nonsense of "URGENT"

I just thought I'd write a little blog about one of the things that's a big irritation in my life at the moment. After all, that's what a blog is for right? To share the inane things in ones life that actually, no one is really interested in?

Well, for the record, I would like to talk about the word "URGENT".

For me, it no longer carries any meaning. You see, I receive "URGENT" emails everyday. Infact, I usually receive several. To the point where in fact "URGENT" is in fact normal - it has been fully devalued. I do sometimes wonder how these people think they can decide for me what is "URGENT" and what is not, and how they think putting the word in big capital letters in the subject of their email is going to have any influence on my decision.

This would not be so irritating, if I didn't already have plenty of genuinely "URGENT" issues to deal with and when in-fact most of these other "URGENT" requests are so trivial. So, in fact, what such action is likely to achieve is a flinch, a probable "FFS", and the likelihood that I will in fact ignore the request for a little while just to teach them a lesson (and to make me feel like some kind of bad-ass - hey you gotta get your kicks somehow!). Bur seriouslt - you remember the boy who cried wolf?

Anyway, rant over, now, please excuse me, I have some URGENT holiday business to attend to....

Playing Catch-up!

Its been a while since I blogged, so what have I been up to?!

Well, lets start with the Christmas, which amazingly is over a month ago now! I think the last little blog I did was my prediction of what a great christmas it was going to be.

Well, I guess that was in part right. Leading up to Christmas I saw my beloved Stereophonics twice - once in Cardiff with Debs and Si, and once in Sheffiled with Jon and Si. Both really awesome gigs (obviously!). and fun times had in Swindon and Sheffield before and after each of the gigs including a rather comical attempt to build a wardrobe, which, whilst ultimate successful, threatened to be a bit of a disaster!

There was also a good night out in Darlo (straight after the Sheffield gig actually) with a number of the Darlo folk, ending up in Inside Out for a boogy. Cracking!

There was the now traditional christmas eve trip to Castleford for some boarding and a meal. It was a good sesh, and we managed to get into F&B's for the meal, which was a definite bonus! I pushed the boat out and had two desserts - Orange Chocolate Profiteroles and Chocolate Cheese Cake. It was immense!

Christmas day I spent mostly at the folks, after swapping pressies with Si, and visiting my Nanna. Just a fairly quiet day all in all. Spent the next two days in bed with shocking man-flu! Not good. Pretty miserable time in fact! I did just about manage to muster enough of a recovery to make it to the Armer party for the usual frolics, home brew and the legendary Corned Beef pie. Was good to catch up with everyone. We're a bit more civilised these days - gone are the days of whistling down microphones and hiding from the dog in cupboards!

On the 28th I headed up to Scotland to spend a few days in the hills with my bro and fam. It was really cool to get away for a bit (no, it was REALLY COOL - like minus 14 in a relatively heater-less caravan! - BRRR!). I'll write a bit more about this seperately, so I'll leave this here!

This led up to new years eve. With the tricky choice of wither staying in Scotland for new year, or heading down to Jonnys for a party in Sheffield, I took the option of just staying in Darlo on my own. Got in a nice big pizza, some beers, and just set myself in front of the telly. It was cool actually. Saw the new year in with Jools Hollands Hootenanny (KJ was on which was a bonus lol).

Next thing of note was a night on the tiles with Kris, and Shez who was up for the weekend. It was a fun night. Ended up in Inside Out and boogying to some indie tunes. Da na na na na....

It was then back to work time! Following a bit of a mental period, it was kind of a case of going back to work for a rest! Except we all know that doesn't happen. Looks like 2009 is going to be as crazy as ever at Software Add-ons! All good though!

Not long to wait for more fun times! Went out on the town with the Armers, and after some serious Gavin And Stacey watching over the festive period, it became a bit of a theme for the night. Very funny!

The week after that I went to see Strictly Come Dancing Live at the Metro. That was a pretty sweet afternoon to be fair... again, I'll write a bit more about that separately.

The weekend after that I was down in Derby with my Uni mates. Had much fun there too! Did some drinking, some snowboarding (at Tamworth), had an amazing Salmon curry, and played a lot of Wii!

So that brings us to last weekend, when I took a trip across the channel to France (via Geneva) for a boarding trip to Chamonix.

Again, more about that separtely!

So, you can see, I've been busy! It's been really cool though. Life is good at the moment!

In between all of that, work is as hectic as ever. It's good though, the credit crunch doesn't seem to be affecting us too much at the moment. I'm enjoying it at the moment too, so it's all good really!

Goodbye Jolly January, Hello Funtime February!

Well, January is done already. Where did that go?! It's been a pretty good month, all in all. Lots of fun times.

Difficult to really pick a highlight. Strictly Come Dancing Live was far better than I expected it to be, I've had a couple of top nights out, and of course, the boarding trip to Cham.....

Who am I kidding, the boarding trip has got to be the highlight :-D

Les Grand Montets (Chamonix, France)

The Grands Montets boasts the best Off-piste areas in the Chamonix region. However, being a bit of a noob to the area, and on my own, I tended to stick to exploring the pisted area on offer.

Unfortunately most of the upper areas were closed due to high winds when I was there, but I did manage to get a couple of runs off the gondola (Bochard) fromthe mid-station and found the red run down from there good fun - very quick, very wide piste, but with plenty of ungroomed snow to the sides to go and have a bit of a play in. In good conditions, with more snow, this would have been an excellent run. The black run off here looked like it could have been interested - but was closed.

The cable car to the very top was also closed whilst I was there which is a crying shame as by all accounts the runs from the top are where the fun is to be had.

However, there were plenty of fun routes lower down. Trek further afield to the Tabe, Retour Pendant and Plan Roujon chairs and theres some good runs, with some trees about to go play in, and the park was excellent.

All in all, a fun resort, even when half of it was closed!

Brevent / Flegere (Chamonix)

Brevent/Flegere are two resorts in the Chamonix area both independantly accessable, but linked from the slopes themselves by a cable car, making the overrall ski area pretty large and varied.

The area is very well layed out in terms of accessability from the ski lifts, making it very easy to take the lift up into the Flegere area and make your way across (and back) to the Brevent area (or vice versa) within one day.

I found the Flegere area more boarder friendly with a seemingly large portion of the Brevant runs quite narrow. But don't miss the black runs from right at the top of the Brevent area (you'll take a second cable car to get there). Whilst also offering a panoramic view of the surrounding Alps (although when I went visibility was so poor, I could barely see my hand in front of my face!), the black runs off here are a real treat!

Cloud Computing and Windows Azure

I have just introduced myself to the concept of cloud computing, and spent some time researching what it's all about.

I could try and explain, but that's probably a bit pointless, as you'll either know already, or you will just go to Wikipedia and look it up. Infact, here's the link to save you the effort:

Now, as people who know me in a professional capacity might know, I'm not always Microsoft's best friend. However, the work they have done with Windows Azure is both fascinating, and really really bloody clever - not to mention incredibly powerful and useful.

Windows Azure is basically an "Operating System" for the cloud. It provides an easy and intelligent way to deploy applications that can run "in the cloud" benefiting from seamless scalability and resilience.

Before I turn into an advert for Microsoft which would probably alienate me form most of my colleagues (!), I'll simply point you here to find out more. Clever stuff!

Twitter? What's the point?

It would seem that Twitter is the latest online craze to hit the UK. What is it?, Well, in Twitter's own words...

"Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?"

It basically allows you to tell the world in 250 characters what you are currently up to. People can subscribe to your Twitters and keep tabs on what you are up to.

Personally, I can't see the appeal, there doesn't seem much point when you can do exactly the same with facebook status updates, and take advantage of all the other features that it has to offer.

I guess, one mildly interesting thing about Twitter is that many celebs seem to be using it, so it is a bit of an insight into their lives, but for the everyday plod like you and me, I just don't see the appeal.

Quite frankly, do I really care that you've "just realised you can't have cornflakes because the milk has gone off"?

Chamonix Boarding Trip!

So just last weekend I went on a solo trip out to Chamonix to get a couple of days on my snowboard (yes... at the same time it decided to dump a load of snow in the UK...).

So, flew out to Geneva on the Saturday. Usual Easy Jet job, and then a transfer from the airport to the hostel where I was staying. The transfer was with ChamExpress, who I would throughly recommend to anyone looking to do the same.

I arrived at the hostel (The Ski Station More info at about half eleven and pretty much got sorted for bed straight away, so I could get up nice and early the next morning.

Was up ready to hit the slopes about 9am in the morning, and having sorted out with Veronique (the friendly hostel lady), I was ready to hit the slopes... and quite handily there was a Gondola pretty much right outside the front door! :-) So, after acquiring a ticket and losing a giraffe, day one was spent on the Brevent / Flegere resort. Pretty good, if hard going at times (the legs not quite used to it and a general lack of sleep over the past few weeks!).

Lunch was even more hard work... only because it's never easy paying £17 for some basic Spac bol, a beer and a water! - Ouch! Fortunately, the £5 bottle of Mont Blanc beer was nice, so that softened the blow a little!

Had a pretty intense afternoon, and got a decent number of runs in. Overrall, just nice to get some slope time. Took the cable car to the top for a black run and a panoramic view of the alps - well, that was the plan, truth was I could barely see more than a foot in front of me!

When I got back, I grabbed a shower and then headed into town to assess the bus situation for the other resorts, and to grab some food. I decided to try and save some money by buying stuff for a sandwhich but still managed to spend £27 on fairly basic stuff... lesson learnt - Chamonix is EXPENSIVE!!

Made my sandwich in the hostel kitchen, supped one beer, then headed to bed for an early. Was whacked and not really finding it easy to chat socialise when there was so much going on and I didn't really know anyone. Bit difficult actually. Felt a bit awkward in there on my own on day one. Just not good with lots of new people!

Anyway, up nice and early the next day to hit Le Grands Montets area. This meant getting a bus, but again, very conveniantly, the bus stops were just a short walk down a mentally steep hill from the hostel. All very easy!

Arrived there to find my goggles were missing. So loss number two of the holidays! Things get worse when I look in my rucksack to see my sunglasses smashed to pieces! Argh! Oh well, decide to carry on regardless and shoot straight up the gondola to the highest reachable point of the mountain (the top was closed because with hight winds). It was soon easy to see why higher peaks were closed. The wind, even at the top of the lower gondola was a bit wild. And, with no goggles, and snow blowing wildly in my face. It was, to say the least, tricky!

Following that I had to give in and buy some "cheap" sunnies... only €30...! Managed to get another run in on the gondola, and the main chair before it closed for the day. Apparently all the other resorts were shut too, so just as well I didn't give in to the idea of disappearing back on a bus and going somewhere else.

The afternoon was one of broken lifts and queuing, but, also some good runs and good fun, including some playing in the park and some fakie riding! Didn't stop much. In the shop the night before I'd bought a bag of cakes and some water so that kept me going - no stopping for ludicrously priced lunches today!

Rounded the day off by doing the board out, from the middle station to the bottom. Surprisingly quite boarder friendly, but, as it was getting late, it was fair bedlam, and pretty exhausting. Still, by the time I'd finished, I knew I'd packed as much boarding as humanly possible into the two days that I had!

Had an early tea in the hostel and then set out to explore Chamonix on my last night. Did a real exploration mission, and took some photos. I found the most amazing spot with an incredible view of the town and the moonlit Alps. Quite moving and a nice way to round off the trip.

Came back to tales of all the snow in the UK doing the rounds in the hostel. People having returned from Geneva with no way back to the UK during that day. Luckily though, I had no such problems and had a nice untroubled trip back to old blighty!

Tamworth Sesh!

Spent an hour at Tam today with Ed and Dougal. Not overly impressed by Tam - too narrow and too busy, but still had a fun session. Practiced some fakey, and did some buttering!

Too many people about to play too much though. Being up til 4am the night before meant I didn't have a great deal of energy for it anyway!

Still loving the new board. Some twat of a skier did what skiers do and rode straight over my board... and then laughed about it... arse. Nice big scuff on my board now :-(

Tamworth Snowdome

Tamworth Snowdome - the dome with the corner!

I have to say, being a regular at Castleford, I found Tamworth a little disappointing. The length of the slope, including the corner is probably roughly the same as Castleford - if maybe a little shorter. However, it is much narrower. There's also no nursery slope, so go when it's busy and you'll find a whole heap of learners standing around in awkward positions on the slope, and a throng of other people battling for piste-space.



When it's quiet, I'd imagine it's better, but for me, not as good as Castleford - despite the corner!

Oh, And I had to feel sorry for the poor folks who were learning to ski at the bottom on a length of slope no more than about 10 metres long, and with, probably less than a metres worth of incline! It was so bad it was funny!

Strictly Come Dancing Live Tour - Newcastle, Jan 2008

Today I've had quite a different afternoon by my standards!

I have been to see Strictly Come Dancing live, at the Metro Arena, Newcastle. I bought my mum the tickets for christmas - no, not just an excuse for me to be able to go... honest :-)



It was actually, genuinely a really nice afternoon though! Just a real nice fun, and sweet afternoon. Some really amazing dancing and some good comedy moments. Oh, and Rachel won. Woop :-D

Castleford Sesh - First on the ZEPP!!

Having been out on the booze the night before, I was surprisingly up for this sesh - but that probably had a great deal to do with it being the first chance to try out my new board.

The results were very positive. Love the board, it's so much more responsive than my old board. It turns so much more quickly. It has much more flex and pop as well making it easier to lark about trying tricks and jumps etc on. Well chuffed!

After the boarding sesh we went to Chiquitos, which was L-U-S-H!

New Year, New Me!!

I'm not one to really make new years resolutions. I don't really see the point. However, since I got back from Scotland, I have had a fresh outlook on life. I'm not sure what did it really, but I guess just some time away from everything gave me time to have a think and put things straight.

How I am not hungover today is a real mystery. And a miracle. A few quiet drinks after the fireworks got a bit out of hand. Expecially when the bar Route 66 got into the equation, as it inevitably does on a night out with Mr Bell! 6 shots for 6 pound.... so we had 18.... oops...

Special mentions from the night out to the random people from my distant past, the poor barman who we taunted with the jukebox, the guy asleep by the pool table, and possibly the finest kebab ever!

Stereophonics, Carlisle Sands Centre, July 2008 - Review

Quite simply, this was probably the gig of my life. And that's saying something seen as I have just recently seen the Foo's and Wembley, and, not quite so recently Muse, also at Wembley.

The Phonics are my boys though! They took a small crowd of Phonics fanatics through a set full of hits new and old, culminating in the whole place going mental to Dakota.

It doesn't need any more words than that. It was awesome!!

Oh Canada!

So, I've been back from Canada for a week now. I had a fab time. It was a holiday of mostly snowboarding (obviously), but also some ice hockey (Go Flames, Go!), several "Beer o'clocks", humming and singing random catchy songs on the chairlifts (especially "I like horses"), some back-country boarding, and a certain "Delirium Dive".... (twice).

Board - 2005/6 Flow Camo

I'm currently into my second season on my 2005 Flow Camo snowboard. Purchased off my brother, for £70, it is a stiff board that's great for all mountain riding.

It's extremely quick and very stable, so has proven a good progression from my Nitro Resistance.

Although it's now into it's 4th season in total, it's still in exceptionally good condition. It seems quite resilient to bumps and scrapes, so should be good for the rest of this season at least.... by which point I might be fancying a new one ;-)

I've spent almost all day today on this website! I've added a snowboard mini site to give me somewhere to stick all my snowboarding photos, videos etc.

I've also added loads of videos and photos, including the Kopaonik video diary, which you should definitely check out!

I'm also in the process of sorting all my videos and photos out - moving all of my photos to Picasa (http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/philmarsay) and all my videos to youtube. Its quite a task as they are all over the place, but I'll get there eventually!!

I've also made some tweaks to the main site, nothing major just a few layout tidy ups.

Living la vida loca!

The last few weeks in the life of Philly Marsay have been somewhat mental. Two weeks ago I was in Serbia (more about that later), the week before I was working mental hours to get things ready for going away, the week after I worked similar hours to catch up!
Last weekend I was also up in the scottish highlands for my brothers birthday and some snowboarding!
Still working hard this week. We've got a lot bubbling along at the minute, which is great, as things really are looking good, but it is an awful lot of hard work!
I am really looking forward to a relatively quiet weekend, and maybe a few drinkies on Friday night!

Charlatans new album free for download on March 3rd

The Charlatans 10th studio album, You Cross My Path, will be available in its entirety as a FREE download from Xfm’s website www.xfm.co.uk and the Charlatans official site www.thecharlatans.net from Monday 3rd March 2008.

The album will then get a physical CD and vinyl release, in 33 countries, on May 19th through Cooking Vinyl. This will include a deluxe edition and strictly limited vinyl 45’s box set of the LP.

The album is preceded by a free single download, through XFM and The Charlatans site, entitled Oh! Vanity, on February 25th.

You Cross My Path was recorded in Los Angeles, Ireland and the bands own studio, Big Mushroom, in Cheshire. Produced by The Charlatans and long time collaborator James Spencer, and mixed by Alan Moulder.

Kopaonik Details

Gutted. Having found the bargain basement of all snowboard holidays in - of all places - Serbia-, done all the due diligent research etc, went to book it tonight, and the offer is gone :-(

Can't believe it, I was really excited about it as seemed really cool.

Incase anyone is interested in skiing/boarding in Serbia, here's the links I found. It sounds cool. Sadly, I probably won't be able to offer information on my own experiences anymore :(

I did survive Christmas and New Year ;)

Just about anyway. It was a pretty wild and hectic time, but a good one. Christmas and New Year included much drinking, eating, snowboarding, partying and travelling taking in Castleford, Newbury, Southampton, Swindon and Sheffield!

I had a cracking time, I hope you all did too. It did knacker me up though, I was off work for two days with some mystery illness! Alright now though and throughly back into the hecticness of life!

I want this guitar....

OK, lets just forget for a moment that - apart from 3 chords (each one at a time) and the opening 1 bar of "Everybody Hurts" - I can't actually play the guitar. I still want this...

Swindon!

I have been mostly in Swindon this weekend. It was top banana. Cheers to Deb n Dave for being tip top hosts, plying me with rum, taking me to my first Swindon game, introducing me to Longs and cooking me a top-notch Sunday roast ;-)

Also, I can't fail to mention the complete randomness of seeing someone walking a ferret and the Grim Reaper in Somerfield within 5 minutes of each other...!! :-)

I'm sorry, I made it rain again!!

Remember this post.... What followed was abouot 40 days and 40 nights of rain.

Well, it would seem I've done it again. Yep, blame for the turn in the weather can lay solely at my door. Why? Because I refilled my screen wash. Yes, that is a traditional queue for it to start raining.

I drive around for days with it empty and all kinds of shite building up on my windscreen cos I can't wash it, and, as soon as I refill my screenwash. Down comes the rain.

Same old Saints!

Well, at least it was better than the Peterbrough match! Saints looked a lot more like the force of last season again. This is both a good and a bad thing. Whilst Saints look great going forward, and are brilliant to watch, they still look flimsy at the back and look like they're gonna need to score a lot of goals to win games.

This is all fine and well against many of the teams in the league, but up against the top sides - like Watford, it's risky business, and, when the pressures on, in the big games, it's not helpful when you can't keep it tight at the back.   More...

Grrr, it seems I'm destined not to see the White Stripes live. I was supposed to be going in October with Andy, but they've cancelled all UK tour dates!

Apparently Meg is stressed! Pah, I'll teach her a thing or two about stress!!

Last time I was supposed to see the Stripes was at T in The Park a few years ago. Silly Jack White went and broke his arm though!

Ah well. We are going to go and see Kings Of Leon in December instead, so every cloud...!

Yeah, well, I still don't like Mclaren

Hmmm, two good England games in a row. This is almost unprecedented. Still lets not get too carried away. I shant be jumping on any Mclaren bandwagons just yet.

Well done Mclaren for picking what was left and getting lucky. Finally maybe he'll realise that Gerard and Lampard aren't the ideal combination for Englands central midfield. Barry and Gerard worked brilliantly. It will be interesting to see though just what Mr Mac will do when "super" Frank is back from injury - and indeed our German Canadian.   More...

Totally Hungover!!

It's official for 90% of yesterday I was very broken! It seems as the years go by, the hangovers get worse!

I think it was the vodka and rum that was the problem. It was all going so well until i decided I was bored of beer.

Never mind, it was a good night. Ended up in inside out, with some decent indie tunes and a fairly shocking band on! Has been a while since I've been out in Darlo, so it made a nice change.

The Charlatans returned to the UK yesterday with a headline slot at Bingley music live. Other acts there on the day were Talk To Angels, The Good Die Young, Operator Six, Scars on 45, Elliott Minor, The Dead 60's, Milburn and The Twang.

I was there too, and it was great, bar from the weather and a ludicrously large beer queue!!

Boots - Burton Boxers

My Boots for 2005/6. Please lord say I've found a pair that are going to fit me for more than one season!

First things first, these are a cool boot with synthetic leather upper and urban camouflage souls! Aimed at Freestyle riders really due to their lightweight and the amount of flexibility they offer. However, I found they were stiff enough to give me plenty of control and soft enough to be forgiving over the moguls etc!

They have heat moulding inners, and Burton have also come up with an ingenious yet super simple solution to heal lift by providing velcro-in padding that you can stick to the inside of the boot to really grasp your ankle tight in the bottom.

They also come with nice soft laces which sounds a bit gay, but when you are yanking laces through your hands on a daily bases to get them nice and tight, it's nice when they are nice and soft and don't leave you with burn marks on your hands!

These boots aren't cheap at around £140, but they are well worth the money. I just hope they still fit me next season.....

Board - Icon Wallpaper Sets New Standards

I have been looking at the new boards out this year as new board-buddy Andy Bell has been looking to get his first board. Has to be said, the Icon Wallpaper seems to set new standards for an entry level board.

If the reviews and the specs are to be believed, at £200, the Icon Wallpaper board is an absolute steal.

Sintered base, and good all-round performance according to The Snowboard Asylum, make it an ideal entry level board for beginners, and a good solid, and affordable board even for more experienced riders.

I suggest you consider it if you are looking at your first board!
